Ibl Es Saqi was the base of the Norwegian UNIFIL battalion serving in South Lebanon from 1978 till 1998. More than 20 000 Norwegian soldiers took part in the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon. Naturally, a close relationship developed between the local and Norwegian communities, which is still being maintained by many. Many soldiers married women from the village, and many Lebanese in the area learned the Norwegian language.
Each year the Norwegian Constitution Day, May 17, is thus commemorated in Ibl Es Saqi as a natural occasion for emphasizing the strong bond between Norway and the community. For the UNIFIL veterans it is also a fine opportunity to come together and reminisce.
In accordance with tradition, Ambassador Aud Lise Norheim attended the service in the church of Ibl Es Saqi, before laying down a garland at the monument commemorating the 21 Norwegian soldiers that lost their lives during the mission. She afterwards held a speech in front of the community and veterans, followed by the Mayor of Ibl Es Saqi and present UNIFIL commander Asarta.
