Norway provides 20 millions to earthquake victims

The Government is making NOK 20 million available for relief efforts following the earthquake in China.

The visit of Norwegian Deputy Foreign Minister Raymond Johansen was one of the highlights at the opening day of an education project for Iraqi children in Beirut.

The poverty in the Akkar area is very high, which is often forgotten compared to the problems in the south of Lebanon. Norwegian charge d'affaires Aud Lise Norheim went with UNDP to see their projects which aim to improve the situation.

After the war in 2006 many lebanese in the south are suffering from poor housing conditions because of bombardment. A waterproofing project funded by the Norwegian government, helps improve their living conditions.

“We have a responsibility to help the more than 30 000 refugees who have fled from the Nahr al-Bared camp. The refugees need more help now after the protracted fighting in the camp,” said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
